Ruby Red Rockabilly Pop Up
When lots of us think of glamping, we envision Airstreams or canned hams, glitzed to the max. But Mary Huff saw potential where many of us might not think to look, in a pop up camper. She told us, “this project is special because it almost didn't happen. We were thinking that it's a popup how much can we do to it, and would it make any difference if we did? After doing this project I now know that lots can be done with a pop up because ours had a total transformation. We decided to jump right in and do it up, as hideous as the interior was to us, anything was an improvement to that!
The project Mary and her husband tackled is a 1992 Rockwood 2080, which isn’t officially named yet. They’re thinking of calling her Ruby, but are open to suggestions (so why not leave some in the comments?)
Glamping for Mary is all about being comfortable while enjoying being outdoors, “We definitely aren't the roughing it type and love to be outdoors with all the comforts we can pack into our trailer! Our last tent camping trip 5 years ago ruined us from ever camping in a tent again. It was super cold and our air mattress had a hole so we ended up sleeping in the truck to be woken by bear hunters at 5:00 in the morning (we had no idea it was even bear hunting season.)”
Once the charm of tent camping was gone, Mary knew it was time to do something different, and maybe a little more glamorous. Before moving to Georgia, they had lived near the beach and spent much of their time playing in the ocean. After the move, they still wanted to enjoy the outdoors, and decided camping was a great choice. They looked at a few different pop-up campers before they found the one they purchased, but none of them felt right. What helped them finally choose this one was a little destiny and a little good salesmanship, she told us, “This one had great potential and the previous owners were very helpful showing us the ins and outs of everything. It was in great condition. The original owners only used it once a year, other then being ugly the camper is solid and pretty much only needed cosmetic fixes. We were very lucky to have found this deal.”
Mary set out to make the camper the perfect home away from home. “What glamping means to me is camping in style and being able to decorate our camper with a fun flare. I'm pretty crafty so I really enjoy the DIY of it all.” Their pop-up’s theme is vintage inspired, with a rockabilly kick. The theme fits their personalities, and their love of tattoo art and bright colors. They redid the floors, painted inside and out, made new vinyl decals and curtains. They did all the work themselves, and love that the pop up is small, easy to pack up, and just go without a ton of prep work. Pop ups small size make them great for people who don’t want to take on a bigger project, or are worried about towing a bigger RV or camper.
Mary and her family have already taken their first camping trip this spring, and like to go as often as possible. A favorite spot for them is Georgia Veterans State Park. “We like it there because the spots are roomy and it's nice and shady. We love their waterfront sites.”
